Yemen’s Hajjah Governorate in the northwest witnessed a tragic and painful incident in which a woman in her twenties lost her life, in an event that reflects the extent of human suffering that can result from forced marriage and social and family pressure.

According to Yemeni sources, the incident occurred last Friday in the Al-Mahabisha district, where circulating information indicated that the girl had been forced about a month earlier to marry a man older than her, who works as a supervisor within the Houthi group. This placed her in a marital life described by close sources as being full of mistreatment and both psychological and physical abuse.

Severe sufferingDetails indicate that the young woman, shortly after the marriage, returned to her family’s home, attempting to escape a reality she could not adapt to, in search of safety and a normal life. However, her attempts were not met with the desired response.

Sources also reported that the girl had expressed to her father the extent of the suffering she endured in her marital home and the harsh treatment she faced. Nevertheless, the family insisted on sending her back to her husband, amid reports that the husband later obtained a court ruling from Houthi authorities obliging her to return and comply with his request.

Under these complex and pressuring circumstances, the girl’s life ended in a tragic incident that shocked the local community and reignited discussions about forced marriage, as well as the lack of social and psychological protection for women in some areas, and the deep human impact such cases can leave on families and society.
