Meta on Wednesday launched a new AI model named Muse Spark, in what the company described as the first step toward “overhauling its AI efforts.”
Muse Spark is the inaugural model from Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, founded last year after CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of Meta’s previous models, such as LLaMA, and their lag behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.
Meta appointed Alexandr Wang, former co-founder and CEO of Scale AI, to lead the lab, investing $14.3 billion for a 49% stake in the data-labeling company.
Zuckerberg now hopes to see whether the restructured AI team can attract users to this new technology.
Muse Spark is currently available online and on the Meta AI app, and it is expected to improve over time. The company plans to introduce a new “Contemplating” mode, which will allow the model to tackle more complex problems.
The model uses multiple AI agents simultaneously to work on the same problem. “To spend more test-time reasoning without drastically increasing latency, we can scale the number of parallel agents that collaborate to solve hard problems,” the company said.
Meta highlighted that Muse Spark could also help users answer health-related questions, a space in which competitors are also active.
It remains unclear whether Meta will follow competitors’ approach of putting more advanced models behind a paywall.
