  • Male ostrich runs through heavy traffic in Chonburi
  • The bird was safely returned after a 15-kilometer chase

A male ostrich caused quite a stir on a busy highway in Thailand’s Chonburi province on Tuesday, racing at incredible speed among cars and trucks.

The six-month-old bird was safely returned to its enclosure after a chase of about 15 kilometers.

A video posted by a driver following the ostrich captured the unusual scene. In it, he exclaimed, “Who let this ostrich run on the road? Come get it—it’s incredibly fast!”

The driver, 33-year-old Chairat Sompong, told reporters that he had been heading home when he ran into traffic. “At first, I thought it was an accident, but as I got closer, I saw an ostrich running in the middle lane. It looked scared and confused, and I tried to guide it to the left lane, where it finally stopped,” he said.

Ostriches, including male ostriches like this one, are the fastest running birds on land, capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

The bird, named B1, was finally caught about 15 kilometers from its pen in the coastal town of Pattaya, according to its owner, 43-year-old Itsara Boriboon. “I was extremely worried and afraid it might get into an accident,” he said.

Boriboon added that B1 and his female companion, B2, had been purchased five months ago for 15,000 baht (around $460) and had never tried to escape their enclosure before.
