• Fan falls from Mexico City stadium during friendly match
• Accident occurs ahead of stadium’s World Cup debut

A man died at the newly renovated Estadio Banorte in Mexico City on Saturday after falling from a private box area just hours before the stadium’s inaugural match, according to security officials.

The incident happened while the venue, known as Azteca Stadium, hosted a friendly between Mexico and Portugal.

The match was organized as a final test for the facility following round-the-clock renovation work to ensure it was ready on schedule.

The stadium, set to host the World Cup opening ceremony on June 11, will become the first in the world to host matches in three different World Cup tournaments.

Authorities stated that the victim was under the influence of alcohol. He attempted to jump from the second-level box seats to the first level by climbing along the exterior of the building, before falling to the ground and losing his life.
