- Mother charged with murder after infant falls from height
British police have formally charged an 18-day-old baby’s mother with murder following the child’s fall in London, authorities confirmed.
Zahira Bechawan, 43, from Horseferry Street in Westminster, was arrested on Sunday and remains in custody pending further investigation.
She is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.
Detective Inspector Alison Foxwell said on Saturday: “At this stage, we believe the incident occurred in a domestic setting, but we urge anyone with information to come forward.” She added, “The death of an infant is always a tragic event, and the police are acting urgently to understand the circumstances.”
A cordon was set up around Great Peter Street, near Horseferry Road, as forensic teams examined the scene. After the cordon was lifted on Sunday, flowers and children’s toys were placed near the site in tribute to the baby.
The Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Unit is leading the investigation, with authorities carefully reviewing all details surrounding the child’s death.
