  • Daughter dies because of father's abuse, son left with lasting trauma

A court in Singapore on March 13 sentenced a woman to six years and three months in prison for abusing her husband’s two children in collaboration with him, including acts of starvation and confinement.

The husband had previously received a life sentence after their daughter died from his abuse. The two children suffered severe malnutrition, placing them in the lowest three percent for weight and height among peers their age.

The abuse included confining the children in a small 90 cm by 90 cm space, causing serious health complications. These abuses took place from February 2016 to August 2017, during which the children were only allowed out to eat and bathe.

The court noted that the mother helped cover up her husband’s abuse and provided false statements to the police.

She admitted to the crimes on March 13 and was convicted of child abuse and filing a false police report.

The deceased daughter, Ayesha, was five years old when she died in 2017 from abuse inflicted by her father. Her brother, around four at the time, survived but now suffers developmental delays due to social deprivation. He received medical, occupational, and speech therapy before being placed in alternative care.
