  • Meta delays launch of "Avocado" AI model to May due to performance issues

Reports indicate that Meta has postponed the release of its new AI model, "Avocado," to at least May, after it was originally scheduled for launch this month.

The delay comes as the model’s performance currently falls between Google’s Gemini 2.5 and Gemini 3, prompting the company to push back the launch.

Earlier this year, Meta announced plans to invest between $115 billion and $135 billion in pursuit of “superintelligence,” aiming to develop AI that surpasses human capabilities.

A Meta spokesperson said the upcoming model will demonstrate the company’s rapid progress in AI development, adding that new models will continue to be rolled out throughout the year to expand technological boundaries.

“We’re excited to show the results of our work very soon,” the spokesperson added.

Meta’s AI leadership has also discussed the possibility of temporarily licensing Google’s Gemini model to power the company’s products, although no decision has been made yet.

Media reports from December revealed that Meta has been developing a text-based AI model codenamed “Avocado,” initially planned for a first-quarter release.
