  • First drop in average electric car prices in Europe since 2020
  • Electric vehicles accounted for 19% of new car sales in the EU and Norway

A recent report found that the average price of electric cars in Europe fell for the first time since 2020, boosting sales amid EU debates on easing emission reduction targets for automakers.

EU environment ministers are preparing to discuss a proposal to delay the 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel cars, which European carmakers have deemed unachievable.

According to a report by Transport & Environment, all carmakers are already meeting or on track to meet 2025–2027 emission targets, the first step toward achieving 2035 goals, alongside rising electric vehicle sales.

The report showed that EVs made up about 19% of all new car sales in the EU and Norway in 2025, up from roughly 14% the previous year.

The average price of an electric car in the EU dropped by 4%, about €1,800 (≈ $1,960), to €42,700 (≈ $46,500), driven by the launch of smaller, more affordable EV models.

The report highlighted that EU emission targets pushed automakers to offer more competitively priced models.

Transport & Environment added that price parity between electric cars and conventional engines could be achieved by 2030 if the EU maintains its current environmental targets.
