• Fifty-Year-Old Mother Jailed for Holding Woman Captive for 25 Years

A British court sentenced a 50-year-old mother of ten to 13 years in prison after she was found guilty of keeping a woman with learning difficulties captive in her home for 25 years, forcing her to perform household chores.

The victim, known only as "K," suffered repeated abuse, including being beaten, having some of her teeth removed with broom handles, her head pulled, and her hair cut. She was forced to live on scraps of food under humiliating and harsh conditions.

Police discovered K in March 2021 after one of the mother’s children expressed concern for her welfare. Investigations revealed that K had been deprived of freedom, forced to sleep and bathe in secret, and had developed large sores on her feet from constantly cleaning on her hands and knees.

The court also found that the mother had been claiming financial benefits in K’s name for years, totaling over £100,000. The judge described the abuse as “cruel and exploitative,” noting that K was treated very differently from the mother’s own children.

K stated she had lived 25 years in constant fear, losing her life and freedom of expression. After her rescue, she moved in with a foster family, started attending school, began receiving therapy, and is now experiencing a normal life for the first time in decades.

Authorities stressed that the case highlights the need for vigilance toward vulnerable individuals and the importance of reviewing social systems to prevent such abuses behind closed doors.
