  • New AI tools on Meta platforms to combat rising scams

Meta has introduced advanced tools across its apps—Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger—designed to protect users from digital scams.

The tools rely on sophisticated artificial intelligence to analyze text, images, and surrounding context, identifying complex patterns of fraud.

The systems can detect impersonation of celebrities, public figures, and brands, as well as fake links and domain spoofing, taking action against content that redirects users to fraudulent sites.

Meta said these tools alert users before interacting with suspicious content. Its expert teams developed the solutions to counter scams that try to bypass existing detection systems.

On Facebook, users receive warnings about suspicious friend requests, with profile details provided to help them decide whether to accept or block the request.

WhatsApp alerts users when suspicious behavior is detected, such as attempts to link an account to another device via QR codes or requests to visit websites and enter phone numbers, showing the origin of the request and warning it may be a scam.

Messenger includes advanced scam detection and asks users if they want to share recent chat messages for AI review. If a potential scam is identified, users are notified with recommended actions, including blocking or reporting the account.

Meta has also expanded advertiser verification to strengthen credibility, reduce impersonation, and protect users from fraudulent content.

The company works with industry partners and law enforcement worldwide to dismantle scam networks. These efforts have disabled over 150,000 scam-related accounts and contributed to 21 arrests carried out by the Royal Thai Police.

Additionally, Meta runs awareness campaigns with partners to help users recognize and avoid scams.
