The Middle Cairo Public Prosecution decided to refer the artist Jehan El-Shamashirgi and four other defendants to the competent criminal court, after concluding investigations into an incident of robbery under coercion and the injury of a woman in the Qasr El Nile area, which sparked widespread controversy.
Investigations revealed that the defendants had agreed to steal belongings owned by a woman from the headquarters of a wedding dress design company, using force to carry out the plan. They headed to the location in a car equipped with metal plates and executed the crime on June 16, 2023.
Nervous Shock
During the execution of the operation, the victim’s mother tried to prevent the defendants from committing the theft. However, the car driver deliberately hit her while fleeing, causing her serious injuries, while the victim suffered a temporary nervous shock and memory loss, according to medical reports.
The prosecution also charged the defendants with possessing a “hammer” without legal justification and using it to commit the theft. Investigations revealed that previous disputes between two partners in the company were the reason for the agreement to break into the company’s headquarters and steal its contents, including breaking the door and causing major damage to the premises.
The competent authorities set March 23 as the date for the first trial session of the defendants before the Cairo Court of Appeal, amid wide public attention, after the artist had previously sparked controversy due to her comments on social issues that occupied social media.
