California Highway Patrol announced that global pop star Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Booking records show she was pulled over around 9:30 p.m. and officially processed shortly after midnight, before being released.

CHP spokesperson Ryan Ayers confirmed Thursday that Spears was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.

A follow-up CHP statement said a black car was reported “driving erratically at high speed” around 8:48 p.m. local time on US-101, near the Westlake Boulevard exit in Ventura County. Spears was the only occupant and showed signs of impairment. She underwent field tests before being arrested, and her vehicle was towed.

The case remains under investigation.

This is not Spears’ first legal issue. She faced a hit-and-run charge in 2007, which was later dropped after she paid for damages. The following year, she was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation, and her father, Jamie Spears, became her temporary conservator—a guardianship that lasted 13 years and ended in 2021 after the “Free Britney” movement.

She is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
