Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications issued a stern warning to Meta on Thursday, citing the company’s failure to curb the spread of online gambling and fake news across its platforms, according to an official statement.
The warning followed an unscheduled visit on Wednesday by Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid to Meta’s Jakarta operations office.
The ministry said the notice was prompted by Meta’s low compliance with Indonesian laws aimed at combating fake news, online gambling, defamation, and hate speech on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Officials noted that Meta had acted on only 28.47% of reported content related to gambling and fake news. The ministry added: “Fake news, defamation, and hate speech threaten lives in Indonesia, yet Meta has allowed it to continue.”
The ministry urged Meta to strengthen its content moderation systems and accelerate the removal of illegal and harmful material, noting that this action builds on previous efforts. Last year, the ministry summoned Meta and other social media platforms, instructing them to enhance content monitoring to combat the spread of fake news.
