Authorities in Alabama are probing a tragic incident at a local hospital where a young couple, who had just welcomed their first child, were involved in a fatal shooting.

The Homewood Police Department confirmed that the investigation into the death of 24-year-old Precious Elicia J’anae Johnson, who was recovering from childbirth at the hospital, is ongoing.

Police stated that Johnson was shot multiple times on Sunday, March 1, by her 19-year-old husband, Kynath William Terry Jr., who later took his own life, leaving their newborn child an orphan.

The couple had been married only a short time, and the incident occurred while Terry was visiting his wife at the hospital that evening. Authorities have not yet disclosed a clear motive.

Investigators noted that no one else was injured during the shooting. The hospital administration temporarily locked down the facility "out of an abundance of caution," stressing there was "no active threat to patients, staff, or the public."

The hospital also confirmed it is "fully cooperating with authorities investigating the incident."

It is worth noting that hospitals in Alabama are not required to employ security guards, and some rely on metal detectors and additional screening procedures according to their own policies.

The president of the state hospital association said plans are underway to reassess safety measures across all hospitals to determine whether additional protections are necessary.
