- A moderate tremor recorded near Gerash
- Shallow depth intensifies shaking, major damage unlikely
A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck southern Iran on Tuesday, at a time when the country is experiencing military tensions. The extent of any potential damage has not yet been determined.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was located about 52 kilometers northwest of the city of Gerash in southern Iran.
The quake struck at 12:24 p.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface.
Because the earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth, residents may have felt stronger shaking due to the shorter distance seismic waves traveled to reach the surface.
However, given its classification as a light earthquake, the likelihood of significant damage remains low.
