An official investigation has been opened after a 44-year-old woman was found dead inside a cell at Bloxwich Police Station in West Midlands, UK, on 3 February.
According to reports, staff discovered the woman, from Selly Oak in Birmingham, unresponsive in the cell around 14:15, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
She had been arrested the previous evening.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct announced later the same day that it would investigate.
Derrick Campbell, the office’s director of engagement, explained that the inquiry would focus on the circumstances of her arrest, her care while in custody, and the actions of the officers who interacted with her.
“Since a member of the public died while in police custody, it is essential to conduct a thorough, independent investigation to establish the full circumstances,” he said.
He added: “Our condolences go to the woman’s family and friends. Our specialist family liaison team is working to provide support and guidance to them throughout the investigation process.”
An investigative team was sent to review the cell, collect evidence including CCTV footage and body-worn video from officers, and oversee the post-incident procedures for all staff involved.
