- The Arch of Lovers collapsed during violent storm in Salento
- Erosion and harsh weather ended the beloved coastal icon
The Salento peninsula in southern Italy lost one of its most famous landmarks, the Arch of Lovers, on Valentine’s night after a severe storm.
The incident occurred early Sunday as the natural limestone arch on the Adriatic coast was battered by strong winds, heavy rain, and crashing waves.
For centuries, the fragile arch in Melendugno had been a backdrop for countless wedding proposals, postcards, and cherished memories. Now, only two cracked pillars remain, marking the end of an era on the Puglia coastline.
Although the collapse was not entirely unexpected for geologists, it struck the local community as a painful and sudden loss of a beloved icon.
The arch fell victim to the same natural forces that shaped it: coastal erosion. The soft calcarenite stone common to Salento is highly vulnerable to salt spray and the mechanical force of waves.
Over the centuries, the sea hollowed out the cliffside, leaving the delicate bridge suspended in midair.
Several factors contributed to the collapse, including structural fatigue, extreme weather, and chemical erosion caused by continuous wetting and drying cycles, which crystallize salts within the stone’s pores, expanding and cracking it from inside out.
Melendugno mayor Maurizio Cisternino described the collapse as “a devastating blow to the image of Salento and to tourism,” calling for comprehensive measures to protect the coast from erosion.
Melendugno was one of the few Puglia municipalities to submit a €4.5 million coastal erosion project—according to Corriere Salentino—which was recently deemed eligible but not funded due to budget constraints.
Tourism councillor Francesco Stella described the scene as “like a funeral,” as crowds gathered to view the remains of the beloved arch.
Cisternino concluded: “It’s a tragedy we knew was inevitable, but we did not expect it to happen so soon.”
