- Mother tried to rescue them before neighbor and emergency teams intervened
A tragic incident shook the city of Bonham, North Texas, as three young siblings lost their lives after falling into a private pond covered with ice.
The mother, Cheyenne Hangaman, said she tried to save her children by lifting them out of the water and placing them on the ice, but the thin ice kept breaking. She added, "There were three of them and only one of me... that’s why I couldn’t save them."
She noted that her children, aged six, eight, and nine, were full of energy and personality, urging all families to always hold their kids close and tell them they love them.
Hangaman first learned about the accident when her daughter ran to her, screaming that the boys had fallen into the water.
The children had been playing near the pond about 30 meters from the house where the family was staying.
She explained that the youngest fell first while attempting to “ice skate” on the frozen surface, followed by his two older brothers.
“I saw them struggling and realized their bodies were already in shock. The water was freezing cold,” she said.
While attempting to save them, she nearly drowned herself, but a neighbor intervened and helped her out of the water.
“I tried to save my children’s lives, but I had to watch them struggle and drown, and I couldn’t help them,” she said.
According to the local sheriff’s office, the two older boys were rescued first and transported to a hospital by emergency teams and neighbors, while the youngest child was recovered after an extensive search of the pond.
Authorities did not officially release the children’s names, but family members identified them as Howard Doss (6), Kaleb Doss (8), and EJ Doss (9).
The mother described her children’s dreams: EJ wanted to become a famous football player, Kaleb loved singing and dancing, and the youngest, Howard, enjoyed making others laugh.
This tragedy occurred amid a deadly winter storm that hit wide parts of the U.S., including Texas, over the past week, claiming more than 20 lives and leaving thousands without electricity.
