  • Contents from the controversial Grokipedia encyclopedia have begun appearing in ChatGPT’s responses
  • The encyclopedia was cited in rare topics, and its controversial nature has drawn journalistic attention

Journalistic reports revealed that the controversial Grokipedia, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI company, has started appearing in ChatGPT answers.

Grokipedia was launched in October as a digital encyclopedia generated by artificial intelligence, aiming to compete with Wikipedia.

It has been described as conservative and controversial because of the way it presents information, and it does not allow direct human editing; instead, an AI model writes its content and responds to requests for changes.

Journalists observed that some of the encyclopedia’s content appears to be taken directly from Wikipedia, while it also includes material that could be considered controversial or disputable.

A British newspaper reported that GPT-5.2 cited Grokipedia nine times when answering more than twelve different questions, indicating that the encyclopedia’s content is beginning to spread beyond Musk’s ecosystem.

The newspaper conducted an investigation and noted that ChatGPT did not cite Grokipedia when discussing widely known topics or previously disproven claims, but rather used it for lesser-known topics, including some claims already debunked by journalistic reports.

Reports also showed that the Claude model, developed by Anthropic, uses the encyclopedia in some of its answers.

A spokesperson for OpenAI said the company “aims to rely on a wide range of public sources and diverse viewpoints” when providing information.
