A private jet crashed while taking off from Bangor International Airport in Maine, carrying eight people, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. Their identities and fate were not immediately known.
The accident involved a twin-engine Bombardier Challenger 600 jet and occurred around 7:45 p.m. local time on Sunday. The FAA announced it will investigate the crash.
Sources familiar with the matter reported that the crash caused a large fire, though precise details on the cause are not yet available.
Weather reports indicated light snow had been falling at the airport before the incident, but authorities have not linked the accident to weather conditions.
Most of Maine, including Bangor, was under a winter storm warning at the time of the crash.
According to a government official, the plane had arrived in Maine from Texas and was registered to a company sharing an address with a Houston-based personal injury law firm.
FAA records show the aircraft entered service in April 2020.
The FAA confirmed it will conduct the investigation in coordination with the National Transportation Safety Board to determine the causes of the crash.
