A court in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, sentenced a woman to life imprisonment after she was found guilty of killing her five-year-old son, who had witnessed her in a compromising situation with another man, local media reported.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on April 28, 2023, when Jyoti Rathore, wife of police constable Dhyan Singh Rathore, was involved in an extramarital affair with her neighbor, Uday Indolia.
Investigators stated that Jyoti feared her son, Jatin, would reveal what he had seen to his father.
In an attempt to silence the child, Jyoti allegedly threw Jatin from the roof of a two-story building, causing severe injuries that led to his death within 24 hours.
Jatin’s death was initially recorded as an accidental fall from the roof, but police began to suspect foul play shortly after.
About 15 days later, Jyoti reportedly confessed to the crime in front of her husband.
Dhyan Singh, who had begun to doubt the circumstances of his son’s death, recorded multiple audio and video conversations in which Jyoti admitted her role in the incident.
He also collected footage from CCTV cameras installed in their home and handed it over to the police.
Based on the husband’s complaint, a case was registered against Jyoti and Uday, and after investigation, the police filed a chargesheet naming both as accused.
During the trial, the court found Jyoti guilty based on circumstantial evidence and sentenced her to life imprisonment, while Uday was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
Kamal Kishore, in charge of Thatipur police station, said the case was registered following the husband’s complaint and involved a detailed review of the CCTV footage.
Government lawyer Dharmendra Sharma added that the court relied on circumstantial evidence to convict Jyoti, while the co-accused benefited from the doubt.
