Debris of a small plane that had gone missing in eastern Indonesia was found, while 10 people who were on board remain missing, according to officials.
The rescue team said the debris was discovered on Sunday after contact was lost with the turboprop plane during its flight from Yogyakarta to Makassar on Sulawesi Island, Saturday afternoon.
Muhammad Arif Anwar, head of the Makassar Search and Rescue Agency, explained at a press briefing that teams found parts believed to be the fuselage, tail, and windows, noting the deployment of additional aerial rescue units to assist in searching for the missing passengers.
Anwar added: "Our current priority is locating the victims, and we hope some can be evacuated safely."
According to authorities, the plane crashed on Mount Bulusaraung inside Bantimurung–Bulusaraung National Park, adjacent to Makassar.
More than a thousand people participated in the land and air search operations, including air force members, police, and volunteers.
Local military chief Bangun Nawoko indicated that rescue efforts faced major challenges due to rough terrain and dense fog.
On board the plane were three government employees from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, along with seven crew members.
Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said the flight had been on a mission to conduct aerial monitoring of resources in the area.
