An 11-year-old American boy was accused of killing his father by shooting him after his handheld game device was taken away.

The boy faced charges of deliberate homicide following an incident that occurred at the family’s home in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, on January 13.

Court documents revealed how easily children can access guns in the United States, where they are widely available.

Police were called to the family home around 3:20 a.m. after a report of an "unresponsive man."

Authorities found a 42-year-old man named Douglas Dietz dead from a gunshot wound to the head in his bed.

The victim was found in the bedroom he shared with his wife, which is connected to their son’s bedroom by a closet, according to documents.

Authorities identified the man’s 11-year-old son as the suspect after an investigation.

Police said the incident occurred on the child’s birthday, and he entered his parents’ bedroom shouting, “Daddy’s dead,” and told his mother, “I killed Daddy.”

The shooting occurred shortly after the parents went to sleep past midnight, and the child told authorities he had had a good day with his parents but became angry when his father told him to go to bed.

The boy told police when asked about the incident: “I shot somebody,” and confirmed that he had intended to target his father.

He also said he had found the key to the gun safe in his father’s drawer while searching for his game device, opened it, and found the gun which he then used.
