Two lawyers file a lawsuit against the mother of the late media personality Shaimaa Gamal Magda Al-Hashash sparked wide controversy last December

An Egyptian court on Thursday referred the trial of Magda Al-Hashash, the mother of the late media figure Shaimaa Gamal, to the Economic Court, while maintaining her detention until the next session on Saturday to decide on the continuation of her custody.

This decision follows a lawsuit filed by lawyers Alya Al-Khair Salama and Ibrahim Al-Hamid against Al-Hashash, accusing her of defamation and insult after controversial statements she made on media programs and social media platforms.

The court explained that its lack of subject-matter jurisdiction prompted the referral of the case to the Economic Court, with the case files sent to the Public Prosecution for necessary legal procedures.

According to the lawsuit, the lawyers demanded the maximum penalties stipulated in the Penal Code concerning defamation, insult, and threats, in addition to a provisional financial compensation of 200,000 Egyptian pounds, due to the allegations attributed to them and the threats made during Al-Hashash's media appearances.

It is noted that Magda Al-Hashash sparked a wide controversy in December 2025 after appearing in the media and publicly threatening the lawyers, stating that she has possessed a licensed firearm for 18 years, which led the authorities to take legal measures against her, arrest her, and investigate her before she was released on a 5,000 EGP bail.

It is worth noting that media personality Shaimaa Gamal was killed on June 22, 2022, inside a farm in the Badrashin area of Giza Governorate, before security forces discovered her body six days later in a pit on the farm, in an incident that shook Egyptian public opinion and caused widespread shock at the time.
