Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano witnessed a new eruption, as fountains of molten lava shot into the sky, renewing the activity of one of the world’s most prominent volcanoes.
Scientists reported that the glowing lava was being hurled to heights exceeding 460 meters, while columns of ash, gas, and steam rose up to about six kilometers.
This eruption marks the fortieth in Kilauea’s history, continuing a long cycle of activity that began in 1983.
Experts explained that eruptions of this type usually last about a day, but can release up to 100,000 tons of sulfur dioxide, which reacts in the atmosphere to form what is known as “volcanic smog,” potentially causing respiratory and other health issues.
Authorities confirmed that there is no immediate threat to nearby communities, especially since the volcano’s caldera has been closed to visitors for nearly two decades.
