Claudia Sheinbaum Evacuates Calmly During Earthquake Wide Praise for Sheinbaum’s Composure Amid Panic and Fear

Amid widespread reactions and praise from social media users, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum dominated social media platforms in recent hours after her calm and unexpected reaction during a strong earthquake that struck the country during her first press conference of the new year.

During her speech, alarm sirens suddenly went off, causing panic among attendees. However, Sheinbaum promptly evacuated the venue calmly alongside journalists before the conference resumed shortly afterward, earning widespread admiration online.

Sheinbaum stated on X platform, after contacting the governor of Guerrero, that no immediate reports of serious damage were received in the state, nor were there reports of damage in the capital, Mexico City.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake measured 6.3 magnitude and occurred near the Pacific coast in Guerrero at a depth of 35 kilometers. The Mexican Seismological Service recorded approximately 420 aftershocks by Friday morning local time, with the strongest at 4.7 magnitude.

Authorities reported landslides on highways, gas leaks, and damage to homes, public buildings, and hospitals in the state. Video clips circulating online showed cracks in houses, shaking tall buildings, and a fallen traffic signal on a road in Mexico City, without reports of serious damage.

The Mexican Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that Mexico City and Acapulco airports suffered minor damages, which did not affect flight operations.

In a separate incident, local media reported that a 67-year-old man died while descending stairs in Mexico City while attempting to evacuate the building where his apartment is located.
