Old addresses remain active for recovery
Google announced a new feature for Gmail users that allows them to change their email addresses without losing messages or associated data, enabling them to get rid of embarrassing or outdated addresses.
Previously, Google allowed address changes, but without retaining old content, whereas the new feature lets Gmail users preserve their old messages when updating their address.
This feature is available for addresses ending with @gmail.com, and the new address must end the same way.
Old addresses will be kept as aliases and can also be used for account recovery.
The update has not been rolled out globally yet, as the announcement was based on a translation of a Hindi support page, but reports indicate it is coming soon.
This change poses a challenge for email marketers, who need to synchronize new and old addresses to avoid sending duplicate messages that could annoy customers or be marked as spam.
Users may respond from either account, requiring prior coordination.
Reports indicate that the issue is manageable, as other email services already offer similar functionality, but commercial senders need to be aware of it in advance.
