Tens of millions and thousands of safes looted before the crime was discovered
In a heist reminiscent of Hollywood movies, thieves carried out a professional robbery at a branch of a bank in Gelsenkirchen, western Germany, breaking into the vault and stealing around 30 million euros (about 35 million U.S. dollars) in cash and valuables, according to police.
The police explained that the thieves opened more than 3,000 safes containing money, gold, and jewelry, and the crime was discovered after a fire alarm was triggered in the early hours of Monday.
So far, no arrests have been made, and the perpetrators remain at large.
A police spokesperson said the robbery took advantage of the "quiet Christmas days," and the suspects entered the bank and escaped via an adjacent parking garage.
Witnesses reported seeing several men carrying large bags in the staircase between Saturday night and Sunday.
Video footage showed a black car leaving the garage on Monday morning.
The hole leading to the underground vault was discovered after the fire alarm went off, while police and fire teams searched the building.
Bank customers affected were asked to contact the branch, which set up a hotline, as the branch was temporarily closed after a large number of clients gathered outside demanding information.
The bank confirmed that 95% of the safes were breached, making the likelihood of contents being affected "very high," noting that each safe is insured up to 10,300 euros (around 12,088 U.S. dollars) and advised customers to check additional coverage through home insurance.
