A sudden landslide occurred in the Battal Ghazi neighborhood of Esenyurt, Istanbul, causing a car parked on a vacant lot next to the Haramidere riverbed to fall into a pit, with no reported injuries.
The collapse happened on uninhabited land, leading to soil erosion and the car plunging into a pit that formed unexpectedly on the site. Immediately after the incident, police and municipal teams rushed to the location, establishing a security cordon and closing nearby streets with warning tape.
Specialized teams from Istanbul’s Water and Sewerage Authority also arrived to conduct an inspection, especially since the site is located within a protected area along the riverbank. Due to potential hazards around the collapse, precautionary measures were reinforced, and access to the area was temporarily restricted to ensure public safety.
Authorities stated that technical investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collapse, with additional steps expected to secure the area and protect residents, especially amid ongoing weather changes.
The car owner, Judet Turahan, told local media that he had faced numerous issues with the vehicle, including two engine failures and repeated malfunctions. He added, “I went through everything imaginable with this car, even other vehicles would almost daily collide with it.”
Turahan continued, saying he did not feel anger when he saw his car fall into the pit, but rather a mix of resignation and amazement, adding: “I didn’t get angry; I felt a strange kind of joy, I had no choice.” He revealed that he received a call from someone interested in buying the car, to which he jokingly replied: “I told him I’d give him whatever he wants, yogurt or soup or anything.”
He concluded: “I’ve never had luck with this car, I’ll bury it and get rid of it permanently.”
Eyewitnesses reported that the car slid along with the shifting soil and fell into the deep pit caused by the landslide, causing panic among local residents.
One resident, Hakan Aktas, said they had never witnessed a similar incident before, adding: “I saw the car fall as I was passing by in the morning and immediately notified the municipal teams.”
