- Spanish family of four missing after boat sinks
- Search operations ongoing
An Indonesian news agency reported that a Spanish family of four remains missing after a tourist boat sank in Indonesia.
The agency explained that the boat was carrying 11 people when it sank in the Padar Island Strait near the popular tourist destination of Labuan Bajo on Friday night.
It added that search operations for the four missing people are ongoing as of Saturday, and that Padar and Komodo islands in Komodo National Park, East Nusa Tenggara, have been temporarily closed to visitors due to potential severe weather conditions.
Authorities attributed the sinking to waves reaching up to three meters, complicating initial search efforts, according to port authority chief Stephanus Risdiyanto.
Videos released by the National Search and Rescue Agency showed workers in blue uniforms helping passengers, some barefoot, from an orange inflatable boat to the shore.
Other footage showed passengers wearing life jackets on a rescue boat, and another boat kicking up spray while moving across the waves in the dark.
Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago of around 17,000 islands, often caused by lax safety standards or adverse weather conditions.
