A man was banned from keeping animals after starving a python to death and leaving six dogs in conditions described by police as "horrific."

Jake Riley, 35, admitted to seven charges at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court after police found the animals at a home in Rotherham last February.

Police reported that two of the dogs were living without water in dirty cages, while a royal python was found dead inside a glass container.

South Yorkshire Police added that three of the six dogs were later euthanized due to health problems, while the remaining three were rehomed in new houses.

At the sentencing hearing on 15 December, Riley, from Radcliffe on Trent in Nottinghamshire, was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months. He was also banned from keeping animals for seven years and given a community service order.
