Meta has announced its plan to introduce a new age verification system in multiple countries in 2026.
In an interview with a British newspaper, Meta’s Head of Security, Antigone Davis, stated: “Age-verification requirements differ across countries, and companies like ours must comply. Many solutions exist, so we are aiming for a comprehensive, universal approach.”
Davis explained that the new system, called AgeKey, will use the same technology as passkeys, allowing smartphones to recognize fingerprints or facial features to unlock devices.
Meta is currently collaborating with a Singapore-based company to integrate the system across its platforms, a company that already works with services like Discord and Snap to tailor content according to user age.
Meanwhile, governments in several countries are tightening restrictions on minors’ social media use.
In Australia, a law banning social network access for users under 16 came into effect on December 9, requiring platforms to deactivate children and teen accounts from December 10.
Denmark plans to restrict access for users under 15 starting in 2026, while French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed legislation to ban social media use for children and adolescents under 15–16.
Experts note that initiatives like this could significantly change how digital platforms manage age-sensitive content.
Widespread adoption may reduce the need for users to share personal documents, ensuring privacy protection, safeguarding minors, and maintaining full access for adults.
