Overcame chronic Lyme disease and dedicated his achievement to other patients
The 24-year-old Frenchman Killian Le Guyader started his journey in the northwestern city of Rennes at the beginning of this year.
He recently arrived in China, and a video of him standing on the Great Wall in Beijing went viral on social media in early December.
In the clip, Le Guyader said: "Mom, I made it. I rode my bike from France to China, covering 18,000 kilometers and crossing more than 30 countries. This is the highlight of my life."
He added: "I am standing on the Great Wall of China. This is a great success for me."
He noted that he dedicates this achievement to all patients with Lyme disease and chronic illnesses, explaining that he suffered from Lyme for three years and understands how difficult the treatment is.
He confirmed: "If I managed to overcome the disease and achieve my dream of reaching China by bike, others can turn their dreams into reality. Everything is possible."
Le Guyader graduated from a French university in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree and worked for eight months to save money for his trip to China.
He said he undertook the journey because he is a fan of adventure literature, and the Silk Road had always inspired him.
He cycled 10,000 kilometers across Europe and Asia alone, with a companion through Turkey and Georgia, and then continued alone to China.
During the journey, he faced major challenges such as weather and geographical conditions, with some locations exceeding 3,000 meters in altitude.
Le Guyader contracted Lyme disease at the age of 14 after being bitten by a tick in a forest, a disease that is very difficult to fully cure.
He said: "I was exhausted; even climbing stairs was hard. It took me months and years to recover."
A video showed him cycling across a vast desert in Uzbekistan, where he said: "You see, I have to rely on myself for everything. It may seem ordinary, but for someone who suffered severe Lyme disease, I think it is a remarkable effort."
This was his first trip to China, and after staying there for six weeks, he returned to France by plane in early December.
The total cost of his adventure was €15,000 ($17,500), and he received partial funding from a French bank.
