Chinese authorities arrested a young man and his girlfriend after it was revealed they were involved in insurance fraud using her injury, which he caused by accident.

According to local media reports, the man, surnamed Wang, from Panzhihua city in Sichuan province, was in a long-term relationship with his girlfriend, Lan.

Frequent arguments were common between them.

In June 2024, while joking around, Wang jumped on Lan’s back asking her to carry him, which caused a fracture in her chest due to the sudden weight.

They did not call an ambulance immediately.

After reviewing the high medical costs, the couple decided to stage a traffic accident to exploit her injury and claim compensation from the insurance company.

Wang drove Lan to a remote intersection about an hour later, placed her behind the car to make it appear as if she had been hit, concealing their relationship from authorities.

He managed to obtain a large advance from the insurance company citing financial difficulties, then Lan filed a claim exceeding 200,000 yuan (around $28,000) after being discharged from the hospital.

However, the company noticed several red flags, including the couple’s relationship, and alerted the police.

Investigations showed the accident site was remote with no signs of impact on the car, and photos revealed Lan in an unnatural position on a pillow, raising doubts about the cause of her injury.

Police concluded the accident was staged, and Wang and Lan were arrested for insurance fraud, facing up to 10 years in prison and a 200,000 yuan fine (around $28,000).

The news caused widespread shock on Chinese social media, with one user describing the couple as "foolish criminals with no legal awareness."
