The Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, witnessed an extraordinary event when 2,397 Golden Retrievers gathered at Bosques de Palermo Park, breaking the unofficial record for the largest gathering of this breed in the world, with the sound of barking audible from far away.
The park’s vast green spaces turned into a sea of golden fur, with dog owners from across Argentina sitting on picnic blankets alongside their pets to enjoy the astonishing sight of thousands of similarly looking dogs.
Children expressed their joy playing with the dogs, while families captured photos with their pets under the blazing sun.
Participants exchanged fun facts about the breed, such as its well-known ability to detect drops in blood sugar and some types of cancer, and shared stories of how their dogs supported them through different stages of life.
Nicholas Ureña, 26, from Buenos Aires, said: “Since we were children, Golden Retrievers have been part of our lives. We’ve shared everything with them, from vacations to daily routines.”
Attendees watched the dogs interact with one another, some dressed in a variety of outfits ranging from Argentine national team shirts and flags to short skirts and scarves inspired by the Star Wars franchise.
Ten volunteers took charge of registering every Golden Retriever present using specialized lists.
At the end of the counting process, organizer Fausto Duberry announced a total of 2,397 dogs, breaking the previous record of 1,685 set in Vancouver last year.
Duberry, 28, an Argentine actor and social media influencer, said: “It’s a historic event. I feel grateful, happy, proud, and excited all at once.”
When attempting a group photo of the dogs, it became clear that any simple separation between the dogs and their owners was impossible, as the dogs feared getting lost among thousands of peers.
Nevertheless, participants described the experience as fun and enjoyable, contrary to what they expected from the chaos.
