  • Businessman refuses German citizenship
  • Decision tied to identity and values

An Indian man living in Germany revealed why he refuses to give up his Indian passport despite living there for nearly a decade.

Mayukh Panja, an entrepreneur and researcher who moved to Germany as a doctoral student, said he is eligible for German citizenship but chose not to apply.

He explained that the decision is linked to his identity and values, and that his passport symbolizes his Indian heritage.

He noted that while he understands Germany’s history, language, and culture, he does not feel a deep connection to them.

He added that Germany winning or losing a football match does not excite him much, while he gets highly enthusiastic when India wins the World Cup.

He described himself as a friend of Germany, but not someone who feels fully part of the country.

Panja said obtaining German citizenship would mean adopting German values and ideals, which he understands, but he does not expect a centuries-old culture to change to fit his will.

He added that in India, even if his views differ from the majority, he feels empowered to express himself and strive for change.
