  • Fire broke out while she was sleeping
  • She to the United States in 2021

An Indian student, Sahaja Reddy Odomala, studying in New York, died after a fire erupted in her home.

Odomala had moved to the United States in 2021 to pursue higher education and was asleep when the fire ignited, which prevented her from safely escaping the building.

Albany police confirmed that their officers, in coordination with the fire department, responded to the residential fire, and upon arrival, the house was fully engulfed. The team was informed that several people were still inside the home.

Firefighters found four adult victims inside the house, who received treatment from medical teams before being transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Two of them were later transferred to a specialized burn treatment center to receive the necessary care.

Unfortunately, Odomala succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the fire.

The Consulate General of India in New York expressed condolences in a statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ms. Sahaja Reddy Odomala, an Indian national, who died in a residential fire in Albany. The Consulate is in contact with the family of the deceased and is providing all possible assistance."
