  • Rumors about the appearance of ads
  • The company denies what is being circulated

Some ChatGPT users have shared rumors on social media suggesting that ads are appearing on the platform, but OpenAI has denied these claims.

]Nick Turley, head of the ChatGPT team, wrote in a post on X: “I see a lot of confusion around rumors of ads in ChatGPT. There are no live experiments with ads — any screenshots you’ve seen are either not real or not ads. And if we decide to add ads, we will handle it carefully.”

He added: “People trust ChatGPT, and any step we take will be designed to respect that trust.”

Screenshots showing what appeared to be a store ad have circulated on social media, but the link actually relates to the new shopping feature, not traditional ads.

This feature allows users to search for products and display them from different sites, and if supported with instant checkout, they can purchase directly through the platform.

It’s worth noting that OpenAI announced last September steps toward commerce via AI agents, including the instant checkout feature.

However, this does not mean ads will never appear on ChatGPT in the future. OpenAI has previously indicated that it is considering it, which is expected given the large user base compared to the number of paid subscribers.

In November, a developer named Tibor Blahu discovered code in the app referring to an “ads feature,” though it is unclear whether this is an active feature or part of future development.

It appears that any plan to introduce ads on ChatGPT was postponed after the launch of Google Gemini 3, as OpenAI focused its resources on platform development and delaying other features.
