A woman in China has inspired millions on social media with her devotion to caring for her daughter-in-law, after borrowing one million Chinese yuan (approximately $140,000) to cover her medical expenses.
Since June 25, 2020, Liu Yuan has been under continuous care by her mother-in-law, Liu Chen Yan, after losing consciousness in a traffic accident that caused severe injuries to her head, face, arms, and pelvis, along with multiple bone fractures, and left her in a deep coma following skull surgery.
Four months later, Yuan regained partial consciousness but remains in a near-comatose state, unable to open her mouth, move independently, or dress herself, and suffers from incontinence, according to local media reports.
Chen Yan, residing in Xinxiang, Henan Province, never considered abandoning Yuan, dedicating herself to her care over the past five years.
During Yuan’s first year in the hospital, Chen Yan slept on the floor beside her bed, to the point that patients and their families mistook her for Yuan’s mother rather than her mother-in-law.
Because Yuan cannot feed herself, Chen Yan carefully opens her mouth to feed her, maintains her personal hygiene, gives her regular baths, and carries her when needed to move her.
Chen Yan recalled the doctors’ words after the accident: “They said the chance of saving Yuan was only one percent.” She added, “I remember rushing to the hospital, and when I heard Yuan call me ‘Mom,’ I felt a great responsibility to care for her, no matter the challenges ahead.”
