The necklace’s value reaches NZD 33,000 The stolen necklace is inspired by a James Bond film

After six days of closely monitoring all his movements, New Zealand police finally managed to recover a valuable necklace that a suspect had swallowed during a theft from a jewelry store in Auckland. The police confirmed on Friday that the necklace was returned to their custody without any medical intervention.

A police spokesperson explained that the necklace is valued at NZD 33,000 (around USD 19,000) and was naturally expelled from the man’s digestive system on Thursday evening.

The 32-year-old man, whose identity has not been revealed, has been in custody since he claimed to have swallowed the jeweled octopus-shaped necklace while in Partridge Jewelers on November 28. He was arrested inside the store minutes after the alleged theft.

“Inspired by a James Bond film”

It is noteworthy that the stolen necklace was inspired by the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy, shaped like a limited-edition Fabergé egg, with the film’s plot involving a jewelry smuggling scheme including a fake Fabergé egg.

On Friday, New Zealand police released a photo of the recovered necklace being held by a gloved hand, still attached to a long gold chain with its price tag intact. The police confirmed that both the necklace and the man will remain in their custody until he appears in court.

The man is scheduled to appear before the Auckland District Court on December 8, after making his first court appearance on November 29.
