Authorities charged a woman and her husband with murder after the death of their pregnant biological daughter, whose body was found in a Michigan forest three weeks after her disappearance.
Rebecca Park, 22, was in the final days of her pregnancy when last seen on November 3. Prosecutor Johanna Carey stated in court that the baby had been cut from her when her remains were discovered last week.
Carey said, "This is, frankly, evil personified."
The couple, Cortney Bartholomew, 40, and Brad Bartholomew, 47, were charged with murder, torture, and other crimes in Wexford County, about 200 miles (321 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.
Carey explained, "Mr. Bartholomew brought Rebecca to their home, forced her into another vehicle, then took her into the woods where they stabbed her and forced her to lie down while the baby was cut from her, ultimately causing the deaths of both."
The couple appeared in court via video from jail, and their request for bond was denied. Public defender Robert Champion declined to comment on the case.
The prosecutor did not disclose a motive.
The courtroom was filled with dozens of people, including many who had participated in the search for Rebecca, and cars in the parking lot displayed signs reading: "Justice for Rebecca and her baby."
Cortney Bartholomew was Rebecca’s biological mother, though Rebecca and her siblings were raised by adoptive parents.
Her adoptive mother, Stephanie Park, said, "She deserves to be remembered as the sweet girl she was when she was younger."
