A bride in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh refused to stay with her husband just 20 minutes after arriving at his family’s home, leading to a five-hour village council meeting that ended with the marriage being annulled, according to media reports.

No formal complaint was filed with the police, according to a local newspaper, as the matter was handled internally by the village council, or “panchayat.”

A police official said, “The couple separated by mutual consent within the panchayat itself.”

The wedding had been held in a banquet hall in Deoria according to traditional rituals, and the following morning, during welcoming ceremonies, the bride left her room after only 20 minutes, insisting on calling her parents and declaring her refusal to live with her husband, surprising both families.

Relatives from both sides tried to convince her to stay, but she remained firm in her decision.

Her father cited allegedly unfriendly behavior from the groom’s family, but she did not back down.

The village council intervened, holding a five-hour meeting to mediate between the families, but reconciliation proved impossible.

A written agreement was signed confirming the couple’s mutual separation and allowing for the possibility of marriage in the future. All gifts and exchanged property were returned, and the bride left with her family by 6 p.m.

The groom’s family expressed their disappointment, noting that everything seemed normal before the wedding and that the sudden decision caused great embarrassment in front of relatives and neighbors.

The marriage had been arranged six months prior, and the couple had completed all wedding night rituals, making the events of the following day shocking to both families and sparking widespread discussion in the local community.
