A hotel guest in China died after hotel staff held his life-saving medication for five hours without delivering it, sparking widespread online debate over their responsibility.
According to reports, the 51-year-old man, named Hu, was found dead in his hotel room in Wuhan, Hubei Province.
Hu’s death shocked his friend Han Shun, who had delivered the medication to him earlier that day.
Han had taken Hu to stay at the hotel the previous evening after finishing work in a location far from his home.
The next morning, Hu called Han to say he was feeling unwell and asked him to bring medicine from another friend’s house.
Han went immediately and delivered the medication to the hotel around 9:40 a.m., about 30 minutes after Hu’s request.
Han asked the reception staff to bring the medicine to Hu’s room, but they could only provide them with his last name and surname. When Han requested that they check the room number and deliver the medication, they refused, claiming it was not their responsibility.
Han tried to contact Hu several times without response, and due to urgent matters, left a message before leaving the hotel.
Five hours later, at checkout time, a housekeeper entered the room and found Hu deceased.
The family reviewed surveillance footage and discovered that the reception staff had held the medication the entire time.
The medication treats high blood pressure and angina.
The family held the hotel responsible for the death for failing to monitor the guest’s condition, recognize his need for the medication, and respond to his calls.
Staff explained that Han had not informed them of Hu’s illness, and they did not open the medication bag to check its contents to protect the guest’s privacy. Han also confirmed that Hu had not told him the nature of his illness or the type of medication.
