"Egyptian Lawyers": Scene portraying the perpetrator as a lawyer distorts the facts Calls to immediately halt the series and launch an urgent investigation
The scene in the series "Rose and Chocolate" where actor Mohamed Farag’s character ends the life of actress Zeina has sparked widespread controversy between the show’s producers and the Egyptian Bar Association. Lawyer Mahmoud Tafaha, a board member of the association, filed an official complaint with the Supreme Council for Media, expressing his strong disapproval of the series’ content.
Tafaha stated that portraying the perpetrator as a lawyer constitutes a distortion of facts and misrepresentation of reality, which could mislead the public and undermine the integrity of the legal profession. He emphasized that the producers’ decision to change the real status of the accused is unacceptable and dangerous, warranting investigation and accountability. He also demanded the immediate suspension of the series and the initiation of an urgent inquiry into the matter.
“Based on real events”
Director Mohamed Al-Adl responded to the criticism, explaining that the series is inspired by real events but is not linked to any specific case. He noted that the series includes multiple storylines drawn from real-life situations, stressing that the character is depicted as a lawyer, not a judge, to clarify the distinction between artistic portrayal and actual legal facts.
The controversy arose following a scene in which Zeina’s character is killed on a farm by Mohamed Farag’s character with the help of a friend, as part of a turbulent love story between the two. This led viewers to associate the series with a real murder case that had gripped public attention in Egypt over the past two years, though the producers insist that any resemblance is purely coincidental.
