Mervat Salama Passes Away at 76 Veteran Egyptian Broadcaster Battled Liver Cancer

Egyptian media icon Mervat Salama passed away on Sunday at the age of 76, concluding a rich and impactful career in Egyptian broadcasting. She was closely associated with the golden era of the official Egyptian Television, “Maspero,” where generations of viewers grew up under her influence, and her programs became a lasting part of the nation’s media memory.

In recent years, Salama battled liver cancer, and her health suddenly deteriorated, leading to her transfer to the intensive care unit at a hospital in Heliopolis, where she ultimately passed away after a prolonged struggle with the disease.

A Strong Presence on Screen

Mervat Salama was known for her commanding presence on television and her ability to deliver educational and awareness-focused content. Among her most notable programs was Tiyatro, through which she introduced audiences to theater, its performances, and its stars, striving to break the media isolation surrounding the art form.

She also hosted other prominent shows such as Etfarag Ya Salama and Masafa wa Alama, which combined art and culture, and she left a significant mark in children’s programming with Donia Al-Atfal and Al-Masrah Al-Sagheer, making a lasting contribution to this field as well.

Leadership and Family Legacy

In addition to her on-screen work, Salama held several leadership positions, including Vice President of Egyptian Television and Head of the Egyptian Satellite Channel. She was part of a distinguished artistic family, being the younger sister of the late composer Gamal Salama, and the widow of renowned critic and academic Dr. Fawzi Fahmy, former President of the Egyptian Academy of Arts.
