  • Attacker pleaded guilty and judge said his actions were attention-seeking

An Australian man has been deported and banned from re-entering Singapore after jumping a barricade and grabbing Hollywood star Ariana Grande during the Asian premiere of Wicked: For Good.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said 26-year-old Johnson Wen was sentenced to nine days in prison for public nuisance and is now barred from returning to Singapore.

Grande was targeted after Wen pushed past photographers and lunged at her, prompting co-star Cynthia Erivo to intervene.

Wen has a history of disrupting events including jumping on stage at Katy Perry’s Sydney concert in June.

The incident caused outrage in Singapore with many accusing him of re-traumatizing Grande who previously suffered PTSD following a 2017 Manchester concert attack.

During the trial it was revealed Wen tried to enter the premiere twice before being restrained by security on the second attempt.

He later posted videos thanking Grande for letting him on the red carpet and claiming he was “free.”

He was arrested the next day, charged with public nuisance, and pleaded guilty.

Judge Christopher Goh noted Wen acted to seek attention and misjudged the consequences of his actions.

Grande has not commented on the incident.
