  • Condition suddenly deteriorates after procedure, leading to death

A Chinese man weighing over 130 kg has died following gastric bypass surgery in an attempt to make a good impression on his fiancée’s family

According to his family, the 36-year-old man, known by the pseudonym Li Jiang, from Xinxiang in Henan province, northern China, had long struggled with obesity and difficulty controlling his eating habits

His older brother explained that Li had recently started a romantic relationship and wanted to present a healthier image when meeting her family in preparation for marriage

“My brother wanted to slim down before meeting her parents, as the relationship was going well. It was all part of preparing for marriage,” his brother said

Li was admitted to Zhengzhou Hospital for the procedure, which was completed successfully. He was then transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) for post-operative monitoring before being moved to a general ward the following day

However, his condition suddenly worsened, and he was found unconscious and not breathing. He was rushed back to the ICU for emergency treatment but died from respiratory failure

Medical records indicate that over the past year, Li had experienced gradual weight gain accompanied by snoring during sleep. He was admitted with a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and also had high blood pressure and fatty liver

His family questioned whether the hospital had adequately assessed his health before the surgery and raised concerns about how post-operative complications were handled and the timeliness of emergency care

The hospital stated that a thorough review confirmed Li met the medical criteria for surgery and that the medical team responded immediately when his condition deteriorated

A local health committee has been tasked with performing an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death
