Residents of Slovakia may soon have to slow their walking pace, as the country plans to introduce a maximum speed limit for pedestrians. Starting next year, people moving along pavements in busy areas will not be allowed to exceed 6 kilometres per hour.

The Slovak government announced the decision, explaining that the limit applies not only to walkers but also to all pavement users in urban areas, including cyclists, skateboarders, and scooter riders.

Officials said the new rule aims to improve safety for everyone using the pavements.

While the average adult walks at around 5 km/h, brisk walkers can reach speeds of up to 8 km/h—well above the proposed limit.

The new law is scheduled to take effect on 1 Jauary, but it has not been clarified how individual speeds will be monitored or enforced.
