Trial of British man who attempted to end his ex-wife’s life in a horrific manner

- He attempted to set her house on fire at midnight
- The attacker was under judicial supervision during the crime
A 63-year-old man was convicted of attempting to kill his ex-wife after pouring petrol through her letterbox and setting her house alight in Worsley, Salford, at midnight last year
The victim said she felt “absolute horror” when she realized her home was on fire, jumping out of a window to escape, but breaking both her ankles and a vertebra
Martin, who lives in Leicester, was under judicial supervision after previously assaulting her. Their relationship began in 2019 and included continuous monitoring of the victim regarding her food, clothing, and television habits
Police noted that Martin had assaulted her in August 2021 while on holiday in Scotland. He was prohibited from contacting her or leaving Leicester, but he booked a hotel and waited until midnight to attack her home
The victim stated that she continues to suffer from nightmares and flashbacks of the fire, and the memories of smoke inhalation and the fall will never leave her, undergoing prolonged psychological treatment
Martin was arrested on 23 October 2024 at a hotel in the Lake District, where a can containing petrol was found in the room’s wardrobe
Despite later admitting to setting the fire, Martin denied intending to kill his ex-wife, but he was convicted after a recent trial
