Google is preparing to launch an innovative feature within its Google Maps app, aimed at enhancing user experience while walking or navigating on hot days by allowing users to select routes with the most shade.

According to the latest leaked version of the app, Google Maps includes a new option called "Prefer Shade", which users can enable when planning their route. The app will then highlight paths that pass through shaded areas as much as possible. This option is expected to appear in the route settings alongside existing choices, such as wheelchair-accessible routes or avoiding ferries.

Choosing Sunny Routes

The new feature is not limited to avoiding sunlight; it will also allow users to select sunny routes, catering to those who may want exposure to sunlight for warmth on colder days. The code also indicates the app’s ability to estimate the number of minutes a user will spend under direct sunlight along each route.

LiDAR Scanners to Track Clouds and Shade Changes

As for the technology behind this feature, Google has not yet confirmed official details. However, reports suggest that LiDAR scanners may be used to track cloud movement and changes in shade, complemented by satellite data to provide near real-time updates on sun and shade routes.

In addition to the shade feature, Google announced further improvements to Maps, including deeper integration with its intelligent Gemini model, enabling more complex commands, such as setting reminders for future events via Google Calendar directly within Google Maps. A new energy-saving mode is also in development, reducing battery consumption by simplifying map colors during use.
